Our People - The Tarawera Awa Restoration Strategy Group
The Tarawera Awa Restoration Strategy Group (TARSG) was established as a direct outcome of Ngāti Rangitihi’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi settlement. Its primary purpose is to develop and implement a restoration strategy within a co-governance framework.
TARSG comprises representatives from Te Mana o Ngāti Rangitihi Trust, Ngāti Mākino Iwi Authority, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa (Bay of Plenty) Settlement Trust, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Kawerau District Council, Rotorua Lakes Council, and Whakatāne District Council.
While not formally appointed under the Ngāti Rangitihi settlement legislation, the following entities participate as non-voting members of TARSG:
- Te Papa Atawhai – Department of Conservation (relevant Crown agency for the Tarawera Awa)
- Ngāti Tarāwhai Iwi Trust (holder of statutory acknowledgements over the Tarawera Awa)
- Tūhourangi Tribal Authority (holder of statutory acknowledgements over the Tarawera Awa)
